Leveraging Informal Qualitative Data at SSPs: Video Training
Since the development of the Leveraging Informal Qualitative Data at SSPs guidance document, we’ve led multiple online and in-person trainings of the content. On this page we have video recordings of the training materials. The videos are divided into 5 sections, with each section containing one or more videos. Descriptions of each section and links to videos are detailed below. We recommend that you watch videos in order.
SECTION 1: Introduction to Qualitative Data at Harm Reduction Programs
In this section, we provide an overview of the training. We define qualitative data, with a focus on informal qualitative data, and identify the ways harm reduction programs may already collect and/or compile informal qualitative data. This video covers risks and ethics associated with qualitative data collection, particularly considerations for collecting data at harm reduction programs. We also introduce in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. We recommend watching these videos first.
SECTION 2: Determining an Objective and Collecting Qualitative Data at Harm Reduction Programs
This video is the second in the series and focuses on determining an objective, need, or question for data collection. We provide examples of objectives and walk through the creation of a data collection plan, which helps organize who, what, when, where, how, and why data are collected. A detailed example of a possible data collection plan is presented as a sample. Tips for successfully collecting informal qualitative data are discussed. We present ways to collect informal qualitative data on different types of forms, some of which will work for various programs depending on local context and staffing.
SECTION 3: Overview of Qualitative Data Analysis at Harm Reduction Programs
This video is the third in the series and introduces qualitative data analysis. We define key terms and provide an overview of different analysis methods. We discuss considerations for data analysis to ensure folks are aware of biases and analyze data in ways that meet stated objectives. Software for qualitative data analysis is briefly discussed.
SECTION 4: In-depth Explanation of Qualitative Data Analysis at Harm Reduction Programs
This is the fourth video in the series and provides a more complex discussion of qualitative data analysis, with in-depth explanations of card sorting, group coding, and individual coding. We complete a walk-through analysis of mock data from SSP daily shifts as an example, with step by step instructions that allow viewers to see a short demonstration of group coding, theme generation, and analysis.
SECTION 5: Implementation and Dissemination of Qualitative Findings at Harm Reduction Programs
This is the fifth and final video in the series. We discuss dissemination and implementation of findings from informal qualitative data analysis, with a focus on good practices and ethics. We give examples of returning findings to different types of audiences, whether participants, funders, or larger communities. We briefly explain institutional review boards (IRBs) and the role publishing may have in disseminating findings. We recommend that you watch this video only after you’ve watched the videos from the previous sections, especially the video series from section one.
